MARCH 2006 Issue

NBS Mission: " To identify, develop and support athletes of color, who will win international and Olympic winter sports competitions, representing the United States, and increase participation in winter sports"

President's Message

Hello All Seasons,
The NBS Awards Dinner in Banff is a chance to award members and Clubs that stand out as NBS Extreme Best.
Western Region most Outstanding Club-ALL SEASONS
Western Region Outstanding President Award-Gary D. Garrett ALL SEASONS
NBS President's Award given to the most outstanding club in the NBS-ALL SEASONS
Bonnie St. John Award given to the Team NBS Athlete of the Year-Errol Kerr ALL SEASONS

Yes we did it, thanks to you the members for supporting NBS and Western Region events, thanks to the Trip Leaders for making our travels a painless process and thanks to my Executive Board and Activities Committee for making me look so good. Congratulations go out to Justin Webb, All Seasons Snowboarder who won a medal in the race competitions.

Also big props to Sacramento's Ebony Ski & Racquet Club, winners of the NBS Mission Award, given to the club that demonstrates their alignment with the mission by introducing six to ten year old youth to winter sports. Congratulations Sharon.

SUMMIT '06: Now back to Banff, we had a great time, the skiing was OK but the NBS Happy hours and parties were "off da hook" An absolutely fabulous hotel and great people. The weather was pleasant until Wednesday night when it started to get bone-chillin' cold. I elected to stay close to the hotel on Thursday and Friday, I don't ski just because I have a lift ticket, I ski to have fun.

PARTIES: The happy hour on Monday at Aurora's was like old times, it was so much fun it almost brought a tear to my eye. Do you remember the days when you partied so hard you couldn't wipe the smile off your face if you tried? Yeah, it was like that. Do you remember Buddy's Run in Steamboat? Everything the NBS touched this weekend turned to gold. Not a good year to be a renegade or run a strictly Renegade function.

Judge Joe Brown and his lovely wife Debbie skied all week and held court at the Picnic-on-the-Hill. We looked great at the picnic and have the picture to prove it. Props to Keith Cormier and Michael Gray for adding the skiing element to our club photograph.
Thanks to Sherie Hickman and Cheryl Archer for their hard work as trip leaders for the Summit. My First-timer Summit, Rookies of the Year are..............Elan Lambert and Vincent Gaines. They skied and partied like Veterans.

Elections were held in Banff, the new elected officers to lead you through the next two years are: Rose Thomas-Pickrum-President, Ollie Barnes-Executive V.P., Keith Flournoy-Secretary and Louis Clark-Treasurer. Congrats to all.

Summit '07: We narrowed the field from four to two, removed from the list are Copper and Whistler. The remaining sites are Squaw Valley and Steamboat, let me know your choice, I will vote with the body unless you choose Squaw.

Bon Apetit': Fellas its time to show the ladies how well we can burn, get out the recipe book and give Karen Allen a call with the dish you will prepare for All Seasons Annual " Men who Cook".

Remember we still have more ski trips on the calendar and plenty of snow.

Feeling just Outstanding, Gary Gary D. Garrett

ASSC had some Big Ballers in Banff who bought the Valentine dinner @ $125 p/p at the Castle.
Guess who had (3) Yes three, 60-90 minutes spa treatments during the week?
What male packed 5 ski jackets, theme party clothes, other clothes, mono ski & boots and still stayed within the luggage requirements?? (Give Terry some pointers)
What female body slammed Michael Gray into a wall at a party when he pissed her off (You Go Girl!)?
Party Animal of the week:
Wayne Smith. He skied, made every happy hour & every evening party on and off site. It must have been something in that flask that kept him going.
Shouts out to:

Summit 06 Continued

Boy what a Great Summit that was! If you didn't have a good time, you didn't want to. I hope everyone made it home safely.
We have some updates on a few items:
Trip Leader Gift The trip leaders asked you to meet them at happy hour to get your personalized ASSC/ Summit gift. Well we had issues. The gators (neck warmers) were not going to be ready in time to have them shipped to California & distributed before the trip so we had them shipped to Canada. Customs would not clear them without an additional $200.00. We asked our vendor to have them returned to California. When we got back to CA. we are being told that someone named Sherie (not Hickman) actually signed & got them in Banff. Now we are really confused. Needless to say we are trying to track down our merchandise & will get it to you as soon as we do.
GST Many of you asked about the GST (gift & services tax) tax for your lodging in Banff. Normally when you charged merchandise over $50.00 or pay lodging that totals over $50.00 you are entitled to get a refund of the GST that Canada charges. All Seasons applied and received a waiver of the GST tax because all of our group happened to be non Canadian residents. So you didn't pay any GST therefore cannot claim a refund.
Pictures If you were in the ASSC group picture & did not purchase a copy let me know & I will get you one, no charge. I would prefer to give them out at the ASSC meeting on March 1st but if that is not possible let me know how you wish to get it.
Summit post party & photo sharing ASSC normally gets a hospitality suite at Summit/Winter Carnival or has a bon voyage party before we leave to go. Time constraints & schedules would not allow us to do either so we are having a Summit post party & photo sharing opportunity for those of you who are in the area, either living or visiting. The date will be Saturday, March 11th, 4-6pm @ the home of. Cheryl Archer, 2053 Manzanita Drive, Oakland, 94611 Please RSVP so we can get a food count to 510-728-4309 or
Karen Allen/Treasurer/Activities Committee

What does freedom feel like? A Tony Award nominee for best play in 2005, August Wilson's Gem of the Ocean delves into the magical awakening of Citizen, a man seeking a new life at the bustling home of 287-year-old Aunt Ester. Ester, the fiery and spiritual matriarch of a tight-knit group of local characters, sets Citizen off on a journey that gives testament to the incredible complexity of what it really means to be free. The New York Times praised Gem of the Ocean as "luminous . . . Wilson is at the top of his form. There are few playwrights who can touch him."
Ruben Santiago-Hudson, whose 2002 hit Lackawanna Blues was recently adapted by HBO Films, directs this new A.C.T. production. No stranger to Wilson's oeuvre, Santiago-Hudson originated the role of Caesar in Broadway's Gem of the Ocean and received the 1996 Tony Award for his performance in Wilson's Seven Guitars.

Celebrate Black History Join All Seasons Ski Club along with other Bay Area African American community, civic and social organizations on a special night for...The Gem Blues Series - A Tribute to August Wilson: presented by the American Conservatory Theater (ACT), the Museum of the African Diaspora (MoAD), and Biscuits & Blues. Event Date: Thursday, March 2. The Gem Blues Series and Tribute is centered around Gem of the Ocean, the late August Wilson's Tony-nominated Best Play of 2005, which receives its Bay Area premiere at ACT and is directed by long-time August Wilson collaborator Ruben Santiago-Hudson. Santiago won a Tony Award for Wilson's Seven Guitars, and his play Lackawanna Blues received multiple awards from both its HBO and stage productions.
